Former FTC Commissioner Christine Wilson joins Freshfields

Senior advisor brings 25+ years of private and public sector experience to the global market leader in all aspects of competition law

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (Freshfields) announced today that Christine Wilson has joined the firm’s antitrust practice. A former Commissioner with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Christine brings more than 25 years of private and public sector experience to the firm as a senior advisor in Washington DC. She will focus her practice on helping senior executives and boards of directors navigate complex legal and regulatory regimes to achieve their desired business goals.

“Christine is one of the most widely known and respected antitrust and regulatory lawyers in the United States,” said Jamillia Ferris, Freshfields’ US head of antitrust, competition and trade. “Her trifecta of experience as a private practitioner, senior government official, and in-house counsel bolsters our US regulatory and litigation practices. As antitrust plays an ever-expanding role around the world, her understanding of the intersection of competition and consumer protection law, policy and politics will enable her to impart mission-critical advice to our clients on some of the most complex and important issues facing these companies.”

Most recently, Christine served as a Commissioner at the FTC, where she helped shape policies and enforcement actions in the fields of antitrust, consumer privacy and data security, and consumer protection. Before joining the FTC, Christine served as a Senior Vice President at Delta Air Lines where she oversaw the carrier’s regulatory and international legal matters. She was also a partner at two international law firms, where she worked with clients to achieve regulatory clearance for multi-jurisdictional mergers and to defend businesses in high-stakes investigations.

After leaving the FTC last year, Christine founded an organization to provide safe housing and comprehensive support services to survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Freshfields provided pro bono services to the organization including corporate formation. She will continue supporting this organization alongside client practice.

“Given my twin passions of practicing antitrust law at the highest level and fighting the scourge of human trafficking, joining Freshfields made perfect sense,” Christine observed. “As a Commissioner, my interactions with other regulators around the world underscored the fluidity of today’s antitrust landscape. The truly global nature of Freshfields’ antitrust practice enables the firm to provide the kind of nuanced yet seamless cross-border guidance that I, as a client, prized. And Freshfields has a strong commitment not just to providing pro bono services generally, but to halting human trafficking and seeking justice for trafficking survivors in particular.”

Freshfields Global Head of Antitrust Alastair Chapman added: “We are thrilled to welcome Christine to Freshfields. Her arrival follows the recent addition of Colin Raftery, former senior director of mergers at the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority. The arrival of these former regulators makes clear that Freshfields is the global destination antitrust practice. Christine joins our impressive roster of former lead trial attorneys and senior officials from multiple government agencies, including the US Department of Justice and the FTC, underscoring that Freshfields is uniquely positioned to advise clients across all industries and geographies on how to navigate the world’s complex antitrust landscapes.”

In addition to Colin’s recent arrival, Christine’s appointment in Washington follows that of antitrust litigation partners Heather Lamberg and Justina Sessions in Washington DC and Silicon Valley, respectively; Charlotte Colin-Dubuisson in Paris; and Rikki Haria and Jenny Leahy in London, who joined the partnership following the firm’s most recent round of promotions.

With more than 60 partners and over 300 other antitrust and regulatory lawyers based in the US, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Freshfields is the global market leader in all aspects of competition law, including mergers, cartel investigations and stand-alone antitrust litigation.
