Freshfields’ Lorand Bartels awarded MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer “Freshfields” counsel Lorand Bartels has been recognised as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for services to UK trade policy.

Lorand, who is a member of Freshfields’ leading global antitrust, competition and trade group, is an internationally recognised expert in trade law, having taught and published on many areas of trade law for two decades. In addition to his role at Freshfields, he is Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge.

Lorand has advised private clients and governments, including the UK, on trade law matters including free trade agreements (FTAs), technical barriers to trade, digital trade, services regulation, mutual recognition, customs duties, airport taxes, industrial subsidies, and national security.

He currently serves as Chair of the UK Trade and Agriculture Commission, an independent body which advises the government and parliament on how newly signed UK FTAs relate to the UK’s laws on animal welfare, animal and plant health, and the environment.

Commenting, Lorand said: “I am greatly honoured to be recognised for services to UK trade policy. It has been a privilege to be able to work with the government in the development of independent trade policies.”
